First feedback on waste charge trial to come in May, says John Lee

The city’s legislature will be briefed on the first feedback on the trial run of the waste-charging scheme in May at the earliest, enabling the government to develop practical plans for the citywide launch of the scheme on August 1, said Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.

The trial run, starting on Monday, involves 14 premises, including the West Kowloon government offices, two public housing estates, three private residential buildings, two malls, two residential care homes, and four restaurants.

Speaking ahead of his weekly executive council meeting, Lee said he had instructed Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing to lead an inter-departmental group overseeing the trial run.

Each location will have a designated team to follow up on issues that may arise from the trial run, he said.

Meanwhile, Lee said the trial run could enhance his administration’s credibility – with the government demonstrating its pragmatism by taking into account the views of various stakeholders before rolling out the new policy.

“We hope to observe the overall results, participation rates, and other considerations involved in the trial run. Afterward, we will consider all matters comprehensively. We will handle this matter pragmatically, and I believe everyone will give time for these 14 premises to proceed with the trial run.” Lee added.
