UGC-funded university fees increasing by 5 to 9 pc for 3 years: sources

The government plans to gradually increase the tuition fees of eight subsidized universities starting from the 2025–26 academic year, according to sources.

It is reported that the government plans to increase tuition fees for three consecutive years starting next year, with annual increases of 5 to 9 percent.

The Secretary of Education, Christine Choi Yuk-lin, met with some lawmakers to talk about the proposal this morning. It is expected that the government will announce the tuition fee increase proposals for the University Grants Committee (UGC) funded universities within the next few days.

The education chief recently stated that university tuition fees have not been adjusted for more than 20 years.

She had previously announced that they might be gradually increased to reach the target of an 18 percent university tuition cost recovery rate starting from the 2025–26 school year, and is hoping to announce it one year in advance.
