Hong Kong legislature passes third reading to allow e-tickets for traffic offenders

Hong Kong lawmakers on Wednesday passed a third reading of an electronic traffic enforcement bill to allow police to issue penalty tickets against traffic offences or contraventions by electronic means.

Speaking at the Legco today, Secretary for Transport & Logistics Lam Sai-hung said the Transport Department will start collecting the electronic contact information from vehicle owners and drivers in the fourth quarter of this year for the purpose of traffic enforcement.

The police will enforce the electronic traffic enforcement regime progressively starting next year, he added.

The transport chief said during the initial phase, the police force will still issue physical copies of the tickets and mail the penalty notices. Officers will reduce the issuance of physical tickets and penalty notices as members of the public adapt to the change, and eventually fully implement the e-ticket drive.
