Wong Tai Sin primary school to close in two years

The sponsoring body of Confucian Tai Shing Primary School in Wong Tai Sin on Monday announced the decision to close down the school from the 2026/27 academic year, with the school no longer accepting new primary one students in the upcoming academic year.

The news came as a shock to parents and students, many of whom claim they were unaware of such arrangements. Some graduates also expressed sadness about not being able to return to their alma mater in the future to visit their teachers.

Also surprised by the news was the school administration, claiming that neither the principal nor members of the school’s incorporated management committee were informed about the decision made by the school sponsoring body.

However, sources suggested that the school sponsoring body previously arranged a meeting with parents to announce the decision, with the meeting later canceled. The school sponsoring body also attempted to hand out letters to parents, but in vain.

The sponsoring body also informed committee members of the decision in a meeting, yet several members did not attend the meeting, according to sources.

Meanwhile, school chancellor William Tong Wai-lun said in an interview that the school sponsoring body had already mulled ceasing the school’s operation after failing to secure government grants to run Primary One classes last year.

Tong said discussions were made with the principal and the committee since April, with the decision supported by over half of the members.
