Haughey’s rival smashes 200m freestyle world record

Swimmer Ariarne Titmus shattered fellow Australian Mollie O’Callaghan’s 200 meters freestyle world record yesterday, touching in one minute, 52.23 seconds.

Titmus hit the wall at Australia’s Olympic trials in Brisbane ahead of O’Callaghan, who also went under her previous world record of 1:52.85, finishing in 1:52.48.

“It’s unbelievable. I’m really happy to produce a swim that my training reflects,” said Titmus, 23.

She will head to the Paris Olympics as favorite alongside O’Callaghan. The pair share eight of the 10 fastest times in history, with American Katie Ledecky, Canadian Summer McIntosh and Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey all in the chasing pack.
