No timetable set for investigation group for HKU row, says Christine Choi

There is no specific timeline set for the work of an investigation and study group established by the government to address the recent internal operational matters of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), said Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin on Wednesday.

Choi said the group would meet with HKU President Zhang Xiang and HKU Council Chair Priscilla Wong Pui-sze as necessary, either in person or through written inquiries, to clarify facts and understand the issues of all parties.

She added that the most important thing is to align with the actual operational needs of the university, as well as ensure a smooth investigation during such a crucial period of time.

According to sources, the Council is scheduled to meet next week to discuss the allegations of mismanagement against Zhang.

The controversy was reignited after the Council recently sent an email to staff and students refuting Zhang’s claim that he was unaware of the appointments of the interim vice presidents.

In response, Zhang issued a 10-point statement criticizing the Council for the continued leaks of highly confidential documents, and reiterating that he was never consulted on the appointments.

The conflict was brought to the forefront when Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, who serves as HKU’s chancellor, met with both parties in an attempt to mediate the situation.
