Court ruling shows national security risks exist in HK, says Hong Kong’s No 2 official

The recent court ruling on a subversion trial showed that national security risks do exist in Hong Kong, Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki said on Friday.

In a landmark decision, the High Court has on Thursday convicted 14 former politicians and activists in the high-profile subversion trial. The trial involved 16 defendants who had pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit subversion.

Speaking to reporters this morning, the city’s number two official said the ruling reflects that national security risks in Hong Kong truly exist, and is not like what some people refer to as merely chanting slogans and advocating for freedom.

“Their goal was to destroy Hong Kong, disrupt Hong Kong’s constitutional order, paralyze the Hong Kong government, and on a deeper level, use Hong Kong as a base to inhibit the country’s development,” he said.

Chan also noted that ‘color revolution’ happened in many parts of the world, and they all resulted in a decline in people’s livelihoods.

He said the government will make every effort to combat anti-China and anti-Hong Kong moves, not allowing the risks to national security to persist in Hong Kong.
