Around 70 percent of restaurants are plastic-free: EEB

The Environment and Ecology Bureau said on Wednesday that around 70 percent of restaurants in Hong Kong have gone plastic-free one month into the city’s ban on single-use plastics.

The bureau wrote on Facebook that site visits to some 7,000 restaurants found that around 70 percent of them have made the switch to using non-plastic tableware. Chain restaurants also revealed that more than 80 percent of their customers chose not to have disposable utensils when ordering takeaway food.

The bureau said it will in the next month showcase the quality and safety of non-plastic tableware, as well as relevant certificates and documents, on an online platform.

Officials from the Environmental Protection Department will also visit different businesses to assist them in complying with the requirements under the new legislation.
