60 pc of teachers fail Putonghua listening and recognition in latest language assessment

Some 60 percent of teachers failed the Putonghua listening and recognition paper as the Education Bureau released on Wednesday the latest results of this year’s Language Proficiency Assessment of English and Putonghua.

A total of 1,543 candidates sat for the English Language papers while 2,183 sat for the Putonghua papers this year.

There are a total of five papers for the English language assessment, including reading, writing, listening, speaking and classroom language.

For the writing paper, only 51 percent of 1,177 candidates obtained the passing level 3 or above, marking the lowest passing rate among all English papers.

The passing rates stood at 83, 79, and 65 percent for the English reading, listening and speaking papers, as well as 93 percent for the classroom language assessment.

Meanwhile, the Putonghua listening and recognition paper only recorded a 40 percent passing rate, meaning about 60 percent of 1,667 teachers failed this paper.

For the other three Putonghua papers – pinyin, speaking, and classroom language assessment, the passing rates were 64, 84, and 92 percent, respectively.

“The bureau administers the Language Proficiency Assessment to provide a channel for serving teachers and people aspiring to become English or Putonghua teachers to attain the language proficiency requirement,” a spokesman for the bureau said.

Candidates will receive their results by post from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority from tomorrow (Thu) and applications for the rechecking of results will be accepted on or before May 28, the bureau said.

Candidates will be informed individually of their appeal results by June 27.
