Questions arise over backup system failing to work seamlessly after airport computer glitch

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) board member and lawmaker Rock Chen Chung-nin said he would follow up on how the airport’s computer backup system operates, as it failed to function seamlessly during the flight information display system failure on Sunday.

Speaking on a radio program on Monday, Chen said AAHK was informed of the system glitch at 7 am and airport staff resorted to manually updating flight details on whiteboards to provide essential information to passengers.

“The backup system did not seem to function promptly during the incident,” he added.

Chen said he would investigate the operation of the airport’s backup systems, as it should be able to take over without major disruptions.

Speaking on the same radio program, Ng, a tourist from Macau who missed his flight to Cebu yesterday due to the issue, said he was disappointed as he never saw any flight updates or heard any announcements in the VIP lounge.

Ng only learned his flight had taken off when he checked with airport personnel and the airline had arranged another flight on Monday morning but would incur additional expenses due to the delay.

In response, Chen stated that AAHK should compensate the affected passengers so as not to discourage tourists from traveling to Hong Kong.
