HK sees voltage sag across districts early Sunday

Voltage sag accidents occurred in many districts in Hong Kong on early Sunday morning, affecting areas from Tsuen Wan to Tsz Wan Shan.

At about 2 am today, a netizen living in the New Territories posted a message saying that the lights in the house were turned off due to a sudden voltage drop.

Other netizens pointed out that Yuen Long, Fanling, Kwai Chung and Sha Tin were among the places where the lights went out, and a building in Shan King Estate had power outages on multiple floors.

A netizen in a Tsz Wan Shan stated that her flat lost power randomly and she could not sleep because of the heat, having to go down and get some fresh air.

She added that she contacted the 1823 hotline and was told to call CLP, but received no response and was dissatisfied.

A spokesman for CLP stated that at about 2.47 am today, CLP’s 400,000-volt overhead power supply system connecting Yuen Long to Shenzhen experienced a brief voltage drop, during which the power supply was not interrupted.

During a voltage sag, some customers may experience lights dimming or flickering, and some customers’ equipment may trip due to the activation of protection devices.

A thunderstorm warning was in effect during the voltage sag, and it was suspected that the 400,000-volt overhead power supply system was affected by unstable weather.

The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, believes that they cannot wait for the results of the entire incident review and that it is necessary to strengthen the power supply system as soon as possible to withstand severe weather.

The CLP was alerted by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and will be required to submit an investigation report within four weeks along with improvement measures.
