Public hospitals see loss of about 6.1 pc doctors, with over 1,000 resignations in three years

The Health Bureau on Tuesday revealed that there has been a loss of 6.1 percent of full-time doctors and 9.5 percent of full-time nurses in the year 2023/2024.

The bureau stated that in the past three years, public hospitals have seen over 1,032 full-time doctors leave for reasons unrelated to retirement.

The Kowloon Central Cluster suffered the most significant loss, losing 204 doctors within three years, which accounted for one-fifth of the total losses.

The loss of full-time nurses was more severe, with 6,049 resigning due to reasons unrelated to retirement. The Kowloon cluster suffered the most losses again as 1,346 nurses resigned – accounting for 22 percent of the total loss.

The Health Bureau said that 630 doctors were hired by public hospitals between April and December 2023, which is more than the 281 doctors who left during the same period.
