HK to host eight sports events at 2025 National Games, including fencing

Hong Kong will be hosting eight sports events at the 2025 National Games, including fencing and track cycling.

The announcement comes after Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu led a government delegation to Guangzhou on Thursday to attend the inaugural meeting of the Organising Committee of the 15th National Games.

The delegation also included the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung and the Head of the National Games Coordination Office Yeung Tak-keung.

The other sports events of the Games that take place in the city include rugby sevens, golf, triathlon, beach volleyball, men’s handball, and basketball (men U22), as well as one mass participation event, Bowling.

Lee said that next year’s National Games and Paralympic Games will be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, which is an excellent opportunity for Hong Kong to demonstrate its capability of hosting large-scale sports events.

He added that the SAR government attaches great importance to the games’ preparations and will actively cooperate with the requirements of the General Administration of Sport of China and maintain close contact with the Guangdong and Macau authorities to jointly organize a “simple, safe and wonderful” Games.

The National Games will be held from November 9 to 21 next year.

Lawmaker Vincent Cheng Wing-shun said that holding the National Games’ sports events in Hong Kong will pave the way for more cooperation with other Greater Bay Area cities to organize sports tournaments.

He added that the eight events are all familiar and popular among Hongkongers, and the people will know the city is capable of organizing mega-events as well as bringing brilliant experiences for tourists.
