Rain predicted for Hong Kong over coming 10 days: Observatory

The Hong Kong Observatory predicted that the city could expect rain for the coming 10 days, with the possibility of thunderstorms as the Easter weekend is just around the corner.

The weather watchdog said the Easterly airstream, now affecting the coast of Guangdong, is gradually being replaced by a Southerly airstream. That coupled with a band of thundery showers affecting the northern part of southern China.

Besides being under the influence of upper-air disturbances, there will be heavy showers and squally thunderstorms over southern China throughout the weekend and early next week.

With the upper-air disturbances departing slightly, the weather will improve over the coastal areas of Guangdong midweek next week, said the Observatory.

According to the watchdog’s nine-day weather forecast, it will be mainly cloudy with a few showers on Saturday. The showers will be more frequent later in the day with isolated squally thunderstorms. On Sunday, the weather will be cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms.

Weather conditions will slightly improve starting Tuesday, with one or two showers throughout the day, along with sunny intervals. The temperature will also reach up to 30 degrees Celsius.

The Observatory also warned of unstable weather in the Greater Bay Area, reminding holiday travelers to prepare for adverse weather conditions.

The weather forecast released by the mainland’s National Meteorological Center on Thursday indicated that some areas in central and northern parts of southern China will experience accumulated rainfall of 120 to 150 millimeters in the next 10 days until April 6.

That represents 40 to 70 percent more than the normal rainfall for the same period and, in some areas, more than double the average amount.

The ECMWF Ensemble Prediction System also forecasts a higher chance of lightning in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary on Saturday and Sunday, indicating active convective weather in the region and advised travelers intending to head north should pay special attention to their travel plans and be prepared for possible sudden adverse weather.
