Up to 11 million expected to travel during Easter and Ching Ming

Up to 11 million people are expected to travel in and out of the city’s land, sea, and air control points during the upcoming Easter and Ching Ming holidays, the Immigration Department said on Monday, adding it was making preparations accordingly.

The department said in a statement that it wanted to ensure a smooth flow of passenger traffic as around 9.5 million passengers will pass through its land boundary control points connecting to Shenzhen, with around 601,000 outbound travelers expected on Good Friday (March 29) and 589,000 inbound travelers on Easter Monday (April 1).

It also noted that foot traffic at Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai- Macao Bridge would be heavy, with a daily average forecast of about 207,000, 169,000 and 143,000 passengers respectively.

The department said to cope with the anticipated heavy traffic, it has minimized leave for frontline officers during the period. It also said passengers may check the estimated waiting times at each land boundary control point via the department’s mobile app before they begin their journey.

Meanwhile, the MTR Corporation said it would enhance services over Easter holidays, adding 300 train trips to meet travelling needs.
